GROWING LAVENDER

  • June - July

We are at the mercy of Mother Nature, as she determines when various cultivars begin to bloom and how long those blooms will last. Our English cultivars are typically the first to start blooming in early June, followed by our French cultivars in late June/early July. The peak bloom is typically the third and fourth weeks of June, lasting into the first two weeks of July, with variations from season to season.

Consult our Bloom Schedule for pictures of the bloom progression in previous years .

Be sure to follow us on Facebook & Instagram for updates.

  • Beyond its pleasant aroma, Lavender has widespread use for a variety of ailments, due to its powerful antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, and calming properties. It has been known to aid with sleep, anxiety, pain relief, healing of blemishes or burns, itch relief, allergy symptoms, and reducing blood pressure and heart rate. Lavender is commonly used in aromatherapy, culinary practices, landscaping, and a variety of crafts.

  • We started with 6 cultivars; Munstead (English), Hidcote (English), Provence (French), Grosso (French), Phenomenal (American) and Rosea (Spanish) and have recently added 12 new cultivars. If you would like to learn more about the varieties that we grow, please visit Our Fields.

  • Certified Naturally Grown (CNG) offers peer-review certification to farmers and beekeepers producing food, flowers, and fiber for their local communities by working in harmony with nature, without relying on synthetic herbicides, pesticides, fertilizers, or genetically modified organisms (GMOs).

The standards are based on the highest ideals of the organic movement. Learn more at www.cngfarming.org

  • Yes, all Lavender is edible, but not all Lavender is pleasant to the taste. There are some varieties, such as Hidcote or Munstead, whose fresh or dried blossoms are often used and appreciated in the culinary realm for their floral depth and flavor. There are many other Lavender cultivars who instead tend to have a more medicinal taste, due to their high camphor content, and although edible, are not preferred for culinary uses.

  • We sell a limited number of young Munstead and Grosso cultivars in the early Spring at Farmer’s Markets or pick up at the farm.

  • Lavender originated in the Mediterranean so it thrives in environments where it has 6-8 hours of direct southern-facing sunlight, as well as soil that is well-draining. There are cultivars that are hearty and more water tolerant that are better suited for this growing zone, Phenomenal is one such cultivar.

  • Due to the high levels of sun needed for Lavender to thrive, it is not advisable for Lavender to be grown indoors. Even a sunny window inside will not be sufficient for this sun-loving herb. Your Lavender will grow best if given 6-8 hours of direct sun daily in an outdoor environment.

  • Lavender can be grown in a container when given the right conditions. A potted Lavender plant would benefit from 6-8 hours of full sun, well-draining soil to avoid any excess moisture, and a slow-release organic fertilizer.

VISITING THE FARM

  • While we would love to welcome you to the farm, as a family-run working farm we are not regularly open to the public. We do host special events throughout the year, including scheduled visits to see the Lavender in bloom, and we hope that you can join as a guest during one of those events. The farm is our home so we ask that you please respect our process for scheduling visitors. Consult the Calendar or Visit the Farm for reservations.

The Farm Store is open without an appointment - HOURS

  • We are not open year-round, but we open for specific seasonal events, including during the Lavender blooming season in June and July, botanical art openings, lavender aromatherapy wellness offerings, and Holiday Shopping events throughout the year. • Directions to the Farm

Our farm is adjacent the historic Warwick Furnace on Warwick Furnace Road in Glenmoore, Pennsylvania. We are NOT open regularly so please check the website for upcoming events and farm store hours and make a reservation where directed.

  • Unfortunately, weather in our valley can be unpredictable. In the case of heat, intermittent or light rain we carry on with scheduled events and make use of our beautiful dairy barn. In the case of severe weather on the property raising potential safety concerns, we may officially cancel the event. We monitor the weather closely and will reach out to provide weather-related cancellations the morning of the event. It is important to us that our visitors have the best possible experience at the farm. In the case of our cancellation for severe weather, guests may apply their cancelled reservation fee as a credit toward another reservation (if available) or the purchase of our products at the farm store.

  • A 30 min visit to the lavender fields and walk amongst the rows of flowers, looking out over the Thomas P. Bentley pastoral preserve. Take some pictures for personal use (see photography policy for other photo shoot requests). This does not include any lavender harvesting. With your farm visit ticket, you receive a 10% discount at our farm store. Sign Up Here.

  • Pick Your Own Lavender activities are season dependant and announced once the bloom has begun. You must make a reservation during our summer blooming season, where guests are able to attend our various Harvest Events, learn about our plants and how to harvest them properly and enjoying the fields while you cut Lavender bundles to take home.

  • During a Pick-Your-Own event you are only harvesting for yourself, and you pay for every bundle you cut to take home. During a Harvest Experience, you will come and harvest for about an hour as many bundles as is enjoyable to leave with the farm and you will get to take home a bundle for yourself and the 1 oz product gift.

  • We suggest a refillable water bottle, a hat / sunglasses, closed outdoor type shoes with socks, and your preferred method of protection from the sun and bugs, gardening gloves, hand pruners or scissors, and basket to hold the harvest though we can provide cutting tools and baskets if you do not have them. A camera is also a great idea!

  • We offer En Plein Air Painting sessions in the fields, Lavender Aromatherapy Sunset Yoga, Bring Your Own Picnics in the Fields, Lavender Wand Weaving Workshops and adding to the list seasonally. All require a reservation.

Consult the Calendar or Visit the Farm for reservations, Facebook, or Instagram for the most up-to-date event information.

  • While we love our four legged friend unfortunately no, unless it is a certified service dog on a leash at all times and picked up after.

  • Well behaved children that believe in fairies and unicorns are welcome but must be supervised at all times. Children under 12 are free for most events.

  • It is a bit tricky with the historic buildings and terrain though we can provide ATV access at times. Please contact us ahead of time to make special arrangements and we will do our best to try and accommodate.

  • We have two designated parking areas; one on top of the hill closest to the lavender (accessible with 4wl drive vehicles when the ground is dry) and another below behind the barns that requires a 10 min walk up the hill. If you have difficulty walking and don't have a 4 wheel drive vehicle please contact us ahead of time to make special arrangements.

We encourage and appreciate carpooling whenever possible as we have limited parking and to limit traffic.

  • We have a toilet in the barn and an incinerating toilet at the top of the hill with instructions for use.

  • Yes. We have a small apiary and the field is always buzzing with bees when the Lavender is in bloom. Honey bees and bumblebees are not aggressive as long as you treat them with respect, and we appreciate the ways in which they pollinate and tend to our Lavender plants.

If you have a severe allergy to bees, you may not participate in the Lavender field events.

  • We offer group tours of 15 to 30 visitors during our summer blooming season.

Tours are scheduled in advance, with each tour lasting 60-90 minutes. We begin the tour on our hilltop Lavender fields, where guests are given a brief history of the property, an overview of our Lavender cultivars and their uses, and an introduction to our region specific growing practices. Subject to availability we also are able to provide a Lavender-cutting demonstration where guests go home with their own hand-picked Lavender bundle. The tour is finished off with a refreshing glass of our Lavender lemonade, and the option to visit our farm store or formal garden as guests leave the farm.

Tour Fee starts at $35 a person (includes private tour, lemonade, 1 pick-your-own Lavender bundle). With purchase of your tour tickets, group members also receive a 10% discount in our farm store.

Option to add on a Bring-Your-Own or Catered Picnic, Lavender Essential Oil Distillation Demonstration, Lavender Wand Workshop, Meditation or Lavender Aromatherapy Yoga Class for an additional fee.

OUR PRODUCTS

  • FRESH

To care for your fresh Lavender bundle, hang it upside down in a dry place, out of direct light, for about two weeks until fully dried. If you have a larger sized bundle, separate it into two bundles in order to avoid mold growth during the drying process.

Once dried, Lavender bouquets keep their fragrance for about one year, gently fading with time.

    DRIED

To care for your dried Lavender bundle or mixed bouquet, simply arrange anywhere that you would like, no water needed, keeping it out of direct sunlight to promote lasting scent and blossoms.

  • A Sachet (pronounced “sa-shay”) can be placed in drawers, closets, pillows, suitcases, shoes, cars or anywhere you want to freshen with the scent of Lavender. In addition to their fragrance, they are also a natural moth and pest deterrent for drawers and closets.

The sachet will last for at least a year, gently fading with time. A gentle squeeze of your sachet will release the oil within, thereby ‘refreshing’ the scent of Lavender. You can also add a drop of Lavender Essential Oil to revive old sachets.

  • We harvest the Lavender early in the morning. The whole flower, stem and leaves are placed in a metal still and hot water is circulated through to extract the natural essential oils from the plants through steam distillation onsite using a zero water waste system.

Lavender essential oil can be used in a variety of ways, bringing it’s calming scent to any space.

The oil can be diffused, whether through reed diffusers, porous fragrance stones, or electric water diffusers for aromatherapy. It can also be put on wool dryer balls for laundry, handkerchiefs to be slipped into pillow cases or carried with you, or combined with other ingredients to make your own Lavender products.

  • Our English Essential Oil is comprised of our Hidcote and Munstead (Angustifolia) Lavender cultivars and has a slightly sweeter scent.

Our French Essential Oil is our Provence (Intermedia) Lavender cultivar and has more camphor.

Our Blend is comprised of Grosso (French) and Phenomenal (American) cultivars and is similar to the French but slightly stronger.

  • Our Lavender Floral Water is a lavender-infused water-based product (floral water is also known as “Hydrosol”), which is obtained through the steam distillation process used to create our essential oil. It has a surprising honeyed botanical smell unlike the more familiar “Lavender” smell of our essential oil. We have also developed scented versions in Jasmine and Patchouli.

Floral Water can be used as a spray for your body, pillow, linens, room or car. In its pure unscented form it can serve as a gentle surface cleaner and can even be used on dogs or horses as a coat spray, or on your own hair. In addition, it has great benefits when applied to the skin, whether as a facial toner or helping with diaper rash or other skin irritations.

  • Our Plain Floral Waters have many applications, including being used as a facial toner, whereas our Facial Toner has beneficial skin-specific additions, such as Witch Hazel and Geranium, which compound the healing benefits of Lavender to best soothe, tone, and refresh your skin.

Gently mist toner upon your face after washing and throughout the day as desired.

  • Our most popular item, the salve can be used for lips, dried hands (and cuticles), elbows, knees, feet… or anywhere you have dry skin. Lavender is sought out for it’s skin healing properties.

  • Our Lavender products are best if used within 6 months to 1 year, when kept in dry cool locations out of direct sunlight.
